What Is Golden Milk?
This nourishing beverage is well known in the Yoga and Ayurveda tradition for its long list of health benefits including:
Reduces Joint Pain and Inflammation
Supports Healthy Immune System
Balances Blood Sugar
Boosts Mood
Supports Healthy Brain Function
Aids Digestion
Protects Against Heart Disease
The benefits come from TURMERIC and its active ingredient curcumin which in combination with other anti-inflammatory spices like cinnamon and ginger makes this a potent healing tonic. Of course, not to mention coconut milk, which is rich in healthy fats (MCT’s) and natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
Fun Fact: Studies say that it’s difficult for our bloodstream to absorb turmeric and completely reap the benefits because most of the curcumin in turmeric gets metabolized before our bodies can absorb it. There are, however, two primary ingredients that can increase turmeric’s absorption and bioavailability:
1) Black Pepper
2) Coconut Oil
I especially love turmeric milk this fall time of the year. I recommend it anytime but it’s especially comforting in the evening before bed.
RECIPE:
1 cup light coconut milk (canned is best: “Native Forest” or “Thai Kitchen”)
1 cup unsweetened favorite non-dairy milk (almond, cashew)
1/2 teaspoon of ground turmeric
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
pinch black pepper
2 teaspoons coconut oil
1-2 teaspoons of raw honey (to taste)
Combine all ingredients to a sauce pan over medium heat. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer. Simmer for about 5 minutes to let the flavors meld.
